IPL 2025 Suspended: Why is the cricket mega event stopped?

Due to the increasing tension between India and Pakistan, IPL 2025 has been postponed indefinitely. The BCCI took this decision keeping in mind the safety of the players and staff, but now the question is when can this tournament be started again amid Team India’s packed schedule?

A look at the calendar: Where is the gap?

The remaining year of 2025 is the busiest for the Indian cricket team. Here is the full schedule:

  • June 20: 1st Test against England (Leeds)
  • July 2: 2nd Test (Birmingham)
  • July 10: 3rd Test (Lord’s)
  • July 23: 4th Test (Manchester)
  • July 31: 5th Test (Oval)
  • August: 3 T20Is against Bangladesh (away)
  • September: Asia Cup
  • October: 2 Tests against West Indies (home)
  • October: 5 T20Is against Australia (away)
  • November: 5 T20Is against South Africa (home)
  • November: 2 Tests against South Africa (home)

There doesn’t seem to be a clear window for IPL in this calendar.

Is IPL resumption possible?

  1. July-August gap: There could be 10-15 days before Bangladesh T20Is after England Test series but it is not enough for 74 matches of IPL.
  2. Clash with Asia Cup in September: Difficult to run IPL during Asia Cup as Indian players will be involved in both tournaments.
  3. November option: There could be a 2-3 week window between South Africa T20Is and Tests, but that is also unlikely.

“We are exploring options, but player fatigue and limited time are big challenges,” a BCCI official said on condition of anonymity.

Franchisees and fans worried

With the postponement of IPL, franchise owners are losing crores. Also, cricket lovers are losing the fun of the season. “We have been waiting for tickets for 6 months. It is disappointing,” said a Mumbai Indians fan.

What if IPL gets cancelled?

If IPL 2025 is completely cancelled, then:

  • BCCI will face a revenue loss of Rs 5000 crore+.
  • Sponsors and broadcasters may take legal action.
  • Players, especially foreign stars, risk not getting their fees paid.

Conclusion: The phase of uncertainty continues

At present, BCCI and IPL Governing Council do not have a clear roadmap. It will be difficult to strike a balance between security, schedule, and financial losses. Cricket lovers hope that the Indo-Pak tension will cool down and IPL will return soon.
